Japanese from SEWS move manufacture from Slovakia to Romania
The Japanese supplier of parts for the automobile industry Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems (SEWS) stopped its manufacture at Topolcany works , Slovakia at the end of July to move to Romania, according to The Slovak Spectator quoted by Act Media. 2015-09-09 14:24:44
The move to Romania is motivated by lower costs, according to the director of SEWS Slovakia, Mike Lawson, referring to company efforts to hold costs under control and remain competitive. Until the end of July most of the 461 employees lost their jobs.
Despite the decision to move production to Romania, the company decided to buy the land under its works from Topolcany. "This was stipulated in the 1997 contract which approve the rental of the public land and its later sale if the company wanted it," said the mayor from Topolcany, Peter Bala in a statement made to the daily Hospodarske Noviny.
A few years ago the Japanese firm was one of the biggest employers in Topolcany. In May 2009 it had 1,129 employees and intended to hire 600 more for the manufacture of cables for the car producer Nissan. 700 employees were fired after the 2009 crisis.
In Romania Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems (SEWS) began investments in the year 2000 with the construction of the cable factory in Deva, Hunedoara. Later on the company built another factory in Orastie and then in Alba Iulia.
