Ministry of Environment will tax people based on how much waste they throw away

The cost of sanitation services will be determined according to the amount of waste disposed of to landfill by citizens. According to Agerpres, quoted by Green Report, the announcement was made in early July by the Minister of Environment, Waters and Forests, Cristiana Pasca-Palmer, during a meeting at the Palace of the Parliament. Pasca-Palmer said that Ministry's employees are working on a draft bill through which citizens will have to pay a tax to sanitation services providers depending on the amount of waste they send to landfill. Those who collect the waste selectively will pay less. Through the new law, the Minister hopes to encourage selective collection and boost recycling. Romania currently recycles around five to six per cent of municipal waste (some statistics show even 14 per cent) and by 2020, it should reach a rate of 50 per cent. Otherwise, the country will risk fines of 200,000 Euro per day from the European Union.
