Conservative Party questions identity

Romania’s Conservative Party (PC) is re-examining its relationship as a party which traditionally ‘piggy-backs’ on the Social Democratic Party (PSD) to gain seats in Parliament. The PC has decided to take part in the local elections in 2012 alone and plans to win city councils in at least three counties. Several county branch presidents are reportedly pondering putting an end to the PSD alliance. “We will take a decision after conducting an analysis at a national level,” said Daniel Constantin, the leader of PC’s European Funds Department. “Most opinions were that we will have to analyse this agreement with the PSD.” Following the resignation of Daniela Popa as president, the PC will elect a new leader at the end of February. The PC has been financed by multi-millionaire Dan Voiculescu, whose family runs TV stations Antena 1,2 and 3 and newspaper Jurnalul National.
