Ambassador Klemm: Women are directly affected by digital exclusion

Women are directly affected by digital exclusion, US Ambassador to Bucharest Hans Klemm said Monday at the opening of the Digital Romania International Forum.

2018-09-17 11:37:44

The third edition of "Digital Romania International Forum" is dedicated to "Women Leadership in Industry 4.0".

"It′s the right topic at the right time," the diplomat pointed out, and talked about the costs that gender gap implies.

Klemm stressed that "due to progress made in access to information and communications technology, a young woman from a developing country can start a career as a programmer with a smartphone or build her own business."

"But there are still challenges in the future, according to the World Economic Forum, women account for only 26 per cent of the workforce in science, technology, engineering and mathematics in developed countries." Gender differences in technology-related fields are even greater in countries with low or medium incomes, which could benefit even more from extra employees in technology," he said.

The figures show, "the women are directly affected by digital exclusion. In global terms, women with internet access are 12 per cent less than men."
